Martha D Lewis has recently presented and was a singer in the globally released feature film documentary entitled 'My Sweet Canary' –an exhuberant cinematic journey into the life and times of Roza Eskenazy –Greece’s best known early rembetika singer. Martha's recording and performing ventures - inspired by the making of the film , presenting documentaries on BBC about rembetika and Martha's musical background as a British Born Cypriot composer . Lewis’ recent CD release Homage To Roza- featured courageous interpretations and arrangements of music from 1920s to the 1950s, providing the meeting and melting pot of Eastern Mediterranean music and new jazz infused compositions.
A recording and performing artist of stature, Martha's career was launched in the much acclaimed award winning music-comedy duo 'Donna & Kebab' in the early 1990s. This long term creative partnership with singer musician actress Eve Polycarpou rapidly accumulated TV, radio and theatre credits nationally and Europe-wide. In 1995, renamed 'Martha and Eve , the duo focused their attention on their prolific songwriting skills and have recorded three albums, a club single and a DVD of their show 'Live at the Hackney Empire'. This 25 year partnership continues. Martha's solo project 'Cafe Aman', launched in 1999, began her journey as a composer with a focused look at her developing vocal style as a British vocalist and the music of her parent culture. A music degree graduate B.A.(Hons), Martha has received numerous commissions for music work including works from the Arts Council, PRS foundation, London Arts Board, music festivals, a short film, theatre plays, title and incidental music for documentaries.
Among many venues and festivals Martha has performed at are the Royal Festival Hall, Kings Place London, Queen Elizabeth Hall, The Jazz Café , Royal Academy of Arts, Glastonbury Festival, London Jazz Festival, Reading Festival, Brighton Festival, Bath Jazz Festival, City of London Festival, Cheltenham Festival, Latitude Festival and Chichester Festival. She has several awards including Best Newcomer - Time Out Award, the 'Best CD of 2007 Releases' from BBC Radio London and a 'Life Time Achievement' Award for London Radio.
